1,900 Miles of Surrender: What Happened When I Stopped Forcing the Outcome?
One week after I put my home on the market, I made a radical choice: I chose surrender over forcing.
I’m not going to lie to you—it was a week of a million moving parts. The very day after I made that internal commitment, we received and accepted an offer on our home.
The plot twist? The offer arrived just as we pulled onto the highway for a 1,900-mile cross-country family road trip to celebrate my niece’s high school graduation. And then came the ultimate test: the buyers requested a 30-day close window.
In my old corporate life, my nervous system would have hijacked the moment. I would have felt the immediate grip of hyper-vigilance, turned the car around, canceled the family celebration, and spent the entire month in a state of high alert—over-analyzing every packing box and timeline. The internal voice of my old conditioning would have whispered: “You can’t enjoy yourself right now. You have too much to control.”
Instead, my partner and I made a conscious decision: we chose to stay the course. We knew we were a great team, and we trusted that the two weekends we had left upon our return would be plenty of time to pack. We surrendered to the flow.
What followed was half a month of pure, unhurried presence.
We awed at the raw, expansive beauty of the New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada deserts as we crossed them mile by mile. We felt our spirits lifted by the vivacious art and souls that filled the shops in Santa Fe and Taos. We stood humbled beneath the majestic rock formations as we drove through the Navajo Nation to Antelope Canyon. We leaned into the sound of family laughter and cherished every single moment of togetherness—completely unbothered by a corporate grid or a rigid timeline.
When we finally returned, we packed, closed on the house, and seamlessly moved into a rental.
Since then, the journey hasn't stopped. We’ve driven through Wyoming, Tennessee, and up through Duluth and Superior. Staring out at a million stars against the lush Wisconsin sky, a quiet whisper echoed right in the center of my chest:
We are explorers.
We haven’t found our next permanent home yet, but we have found something so much deeper: the profound internal authority that comes from leaning into a vision that is calling to be birthed. We are learning the deep patience, strength, and trust it takes to let life unfold gracefully without demanding an immediate, rigid answer.
When you stop letting society's timeline dictate your peace, your world expands. You realize that you don't need every step mapped out to be completely safe, grounded, and aligned.
If you are standing at the edge of a big decision or a major transition right now, let your shoulders drop. Unclench your jaw. You don't have to force the destination today. Trust the journey, trust your soul, and enjoy the scenery along the way.
